The typical canned Corned Beef, very popular on the tables of the inhabitants of Gibraltar, has been captured in a painting created by Derek Duarte. The painting has received the prize of 1,500 pounds from the Ministry of Culture in the contest “Our Gibraltar” of the year 2024. In addition, the name of the product appears, as the Gibraltarians call it in “llanito”, that is, “carne conbí”.

This can became popular thanks to the workers of the British colony in Gibraltar who introduced a can of corned beef, known as “courned beef” in English. Since then, it has become a cultural element of this place and other nearby areas.

Recently, the work “Always a part of us”, large and influenced by Andy Warhol’s pop art, was presented in an exhibition. In it, you can see a realistic can on a light blue background, but with the peculiarity of having its name in English and its appellative in llanito, as a tribute to the south of Spain.

The typical meat dish called “carne conbí”, originally from the city of Hereford, is very famous and recognized for its delicious flavor. This gastronomic specialty is made from cuts of meat from Hereford cattle, a breed of cattle native to England known for its high quality meat production. The meat is grilled and served with various side dishes and sauces, making it a very versatile and popular dish among food lovers.

The Hereford brand is known for its beef in South America, especially in the region through Gibraltar. This brand comes from France and offers Brazilian corned beef using a typical recipe of the Argentine gauchos. This represents a mixture of cultures, countries and continents that reaches the Campo de Gibraltar, an area rich in transit and cultural and linguistic diversity.
