The recycling sector in Spain is in a situation of insurance helplessness due to the impossibility of obtaining policies to cover its activity. According to the General Council of Mediators, the problem dates back to 2019 and has been worsening until reaching the current situation in which it is practically impossible to underwrite any risk that has to do with recycling activities in any of its flows: metal, paper, cardboard, plastic, glass or oils, among others.
The current situation is of concern to the sector, as contracts in the portfolio have been cancelled or not renewed, which means that recycling companies may be, at this time, without insurance. It also argues that the impossibility of insurance compromises the success of the circular economy and the fulfillment of Spain’s environmental commitments, since recycling, sustainable development and environmental protection policies are being promoted, but the right to coverage is being denied and the viability of companies in the sector is being put at risk.
The General Council maintains that it is imperative to seek solutions to help alleviate the helplessness that this situation is causing hundreds of companies in Spain with risk management and rigorous compliance with the prevention and protection standards that they are obliged to implement.
