A wire mesh receptacle crafted in the shape of a giant fish “devours” recyclable cans and bottles at Iron Pier Beach in Riverhead Township in Northville, New York State, helping to keep the beach and Long Island Sound clean.

Inspired by Yoshi and Goby, fish-shaped wire receptacles that have helped keep beaches in India and Bali clean for several years, Riverhead Township’s new vessel was created by local sculptor Clayton Orehek and sponsored by the town’s litter committee, with support from National Grid.

This original container was installed last fall and emptied for the first time in July. The City of Riverhead Buildings and Grounds Division did the honors, and local officials gathered around, for the event. The fish contained about 300 recyclable bottles and cans, which would have ended up in the waters of the Sound, a designated estuary of national importance, where they would pose a threat to marine life.
