The multinational Ball was recognized as the first factory to provide extruded aluminum certified by the American Spice Institute to its customers. The scope of the audit covered ball aerosol packaging at nine global manufacturing facilities, as well as regional headquarters located in Westminster, Colorado, and Lille, France.
“Achieving ASI certification demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and is the result of a rigorous process,” said Jay Billings, president of Ball Aerosol Packaging. To fulfill Ball’s commitment to create a more sustainable future by 2030, the company is committed to ensuring that any aluminum used in manufacturing is purchased only from certified, environmentally friendly sources.
BALL Corporation received a notable certification from the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI), which refers to the Performance and Chain of Custody Standards for the Global Packaging Aerosol Division. This demonstrates the company’s commitment to continuous improvement in environmental responsibility.
The certification covered all nine manufacturing plants, aerosol and Ball containers worldwide. Following this certification, Ball Corporation has become the first company in the world dedicated to the manufacture of extruded aluminum products that is authorized to deliver cans and aerosol cans made of this material with the quality seal and certified by the American Society of India (ASI).
In addition, Ball Corporation recently announced a sustainability initiative with the goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and transitioning to 100% renewable electricity by 2030. They also committed to purchase aluminum exclusively from certified sources that support their sustainability policy.
Increased environmental protection has led many companies to seek certification under the ASI standard in order to demonstrate that they adhere to sustainability guidelines and requirements.
These include the forthcoming Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, which is expected to be introduced by the European Union in the first half of 2023.
Jay Billings, president of Ball Aerosol Packaging, said, “Achieving ASI certification demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and is the result of a rigorous process,” adding, “Infinitely recyclable aluminum containers are an excellent example of material circularity where resources remain in the system, reducing impacts on the environment. The sustainability efforts of our aluminum aerosol business show what can be achieved through the setting of material and emissions reduction targets, innovation and, especially, partnership with customers.”
According to Predrag Ozmo, director of sustainability at Ball Aerosol Packaging, the Sustainable Aluminum Initiative ensures that the highest sustainability procedures are followed from ore sourcing through refining, manufacturing and use to end-of-life recycling.
“It allows the aluminum industry to clearly demonstrate its accountability and provide independent and credible performance assurance,” Ozmo concluded.
