Solán de Cabras and Nea’s firm commitment to canned packaging
It is becoming increasingly common to find canned water in Spanish supermarkets. Solán de Cabras and Agua Nea are a clear example and have made a firm commitment to this format, providing a more sustainable strategy through the launch of new canned water formats, both sparkling and still. Its goal is to replace plastic with highly recyclable aluminum, and to soon make the can the most recycled container in the world.
For decades, Solán de Cabras has been a brand well known for its quality. Despite the reticence of some, the brand emphasizes that the taste of the water is not altered and that its canned alternative is sustainable. “It is infinitely recyclable without losing quality, easy to collect and separate from other waste as it is monomaterial. The degradability time in the environment is reduced,” they added.
According to a study by Metal Packaging Europe and 2018 Ecoembes data, the company notes that in ten years it has reduced its carbon footprint by 31% and is the most recycled packaging (86% of beverage containers are recycled). “It is practical. It is resistant and light material, easy to carry and it cools quickly,” said Solán de Cabras.
Agua Nea also continues its fight to preserve the environment. The company is also committed to defending aluminum as part of its effort to protect and save the planet. Alex Dakov, founder and CEO of Agua Nea, recalled that one million plastic bottles are opened every minute in the world, too many to be properly recycled. Hence the decision to use aluminum for its cans, an infinitely recyclable metal that can be turned into another can many times over.
In addition, this startup managed to plant 1,555 corals and avoid the waste of 25.4 tons of plastic. On the other hand, Dakov pointed out that the taste is not altered because the aluminum does not touch the water. “Perhaps the taste may be due to the fact that the mouth comes into contact with the container and if it is dirty, which can happen with any can of beer or soft drink, it may taste different. But it has a coating so that the aluminum does not come into contact with the water,” concluded the manager.
