The endless possibilities of recycled aluminum according to Leicestershire recycles

A new campaign to promote the recycling of metal packaging has been launched by Leicestershire County Council.

With the goal of improving recycling rates, households across the county are encouraged to recycle their metal containers, including food and beverage cans, aluminum foil and aluminum trays, as well as empty aerosols and metal screw caps.

Led by the Aluminum Packaging Recycling Organization (Alupro), the ‘MetalMatters’ program will use targeted social media campaigns and digital messaging to communicate the wide-ranging benefits of recycling household metal packaging.

Starting in early January and running for six weeks, Leicestershire County Council aims to engage the majority of the region’s 316,000 households. Since its launch in 2012, more than 128 local authorities have adopted MetalMatters, achieving improved recycling rates as a result.

Councillor Blake Pain, lead member for environment and green agenda at Leicestershire County Council, stated:
“We know that the vast majority of people here in Leicestershire are excellent recyclers, but together we can go the extra mile to do even better.” MetalMatters allows us to interact with our residents and encourage them to reflect on their recycling habits and understand how to correctly recycle their household metal packaging, such as food and drink cans, aluminum trays, aluminum foil, empty aerosols and metal bottle caps and jars.

“When we consider that for every aluminum can recycled we save enough energy to run a television for four hours, we can all make a big difference by recycling as much of our waste as possible.”

Funded by the metal packaging industry, MetalMatters aims to educate households about the benefits of metal packaging and encourage them to recycle. Designed to support recycling programs, MetalMatters can be implemented by any local authority, whether region-wide, by collection routes or even through demographic segmentation.
