With the intention of making its production operations more sustainable, Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) has decided to invest a figure equivalent to 11.5 million euros in the modernization of its filling and packaging equipment at its Northampton plant. In this way, CMBC is taking steps to improve its environmental impact and reduce its carbon footprint.
KHS presented its new technology at the packaging convention, which consists of a machine for filling DVDs called Innofill Can and another for packaging called Innopack Kisters Nature MultiPack (NMP), with the aim of improving production and reducing water and plastic consumption in breweries. These machines will play an important role in the industry by offering a sustainable and efficient solution through the innovative Snap Pack Nature MultiPack, developed by KHS in collaboration with Carlsberg Group.
Edgar-George Petsche, who serves as executive vice president of Market Zone Europe at KHS, explained that his company has a strategy focused on sustainability. To achieve this, they have implemented energy-efficient lines and machines and packaging systems that are safe and environmentally friendly.
By making an investment in its packaging system and demonstrating confidence in its versatile can filler, CMBC is proud to join the fight to protect the climate responsibly. The company considers CMBC as a reliable partner in this objective.
Nature MultiPack, also known as Snap Pack in the UK and marketed by CMBC, is a packaging that converts beverage cans into a solid pack by applying a few dots of adhesive. Since its launch in the UK five years ago, by the end of 2022, this format has been used for 65% of small beer multipacks by the Northampton-based brewer. It is currently the most widely used packaging style for four- and six-packs, including popular brands such as Carlsberg Danish Pilsner, San Miguel, Birrificio Angelo Poretti and Brooklyn Pilsner.
Increased ability or capacity to perform a specific task.
CMBC has made a new investment in a second-generation Innopack Kisters NMP packaging machine that allows them to double the amount of containers produced. With its capacity of 108,000 cans per hour, this machine is expected to be used in all of the brewery’s multipacks. The use of CMBC’s Snap Pack will significantly reduce plastic usage by 76%, as it eliminates the need for plastic rings compared to its previous multipacks.
The well-known manufacturer KHS has developed a new universal adhesive that can also be used on its powerful NMP baler. Thanks to this total solution, companies involved in beverage production will be able to create an ideal NMP for any type of standard format and size. In addition, this product can be easily adapted to all aluminum and tinplate can linings.
Water usage in the new filling machine manufactured by KHS has decreased considerably.
In the filling stage, the line will use the Innofill Can DVD technology to improve operational efficiency and reliability. This machine will work in conjunction with the FS14 can seamer from the Swiss company Ferrum, which has a double lid infeed.
The KHS flexible filler not only has a maximum throughput of up to 90,000 cans in different sizes per hour, but also features a small hygienic area that ensures proper and sterile air flow in the sensitive area.
According to estimates, the use of the three new machines that CMBC has acquired to modernize its brewery, including two KHS machines, could reduce water consumption by 10% annually. This measure could save approximately 18 million liters of water each year.
Responsibility with the care of the environment and natural resources.
CMBC has implemented upgrades to its production process in order to become more sustainable. This is part of its “Together Towards ZERO and Beyond ESG” strategy, which aims to achieve zero carbon emissions and more efficient water consumption (two hectoliters per hectoliter of beer produced) in all its breweries by 2030. These measures are part of the British brewer’s ongoing commitment to be more environmentally friendly.
CMBC CEO Paul Davies expressed his commitment to the company’s responsibility as brewers and assured that reducing the impact on the environment is a priority. To demonstrate this, he announced that more than £10 million will be invested in Northampton to eliminate packaging waste, reduce water consumption and improve efficiency in breweries.
By taking bold action now, we can achieve our sustainability goals and enable more of our revolutionary Snap Pack multipacks to reach shoppers.
