The Tesco supermarket chain in Slovakia has selected the world’s leading reverse vending company TOMRA as a supplier of its infrastructure for the collection of beverage containers for recycling. The first tests have been carried out with a pilot project of vending machines in the cities of Senec and Nitra.
From 1 January 2022, when the new deposit return system will start operating, customers in Tesco stores across the country will be able to return their empties to vending machines that will gradually be installed in around 140 Slovakian stores.
Under the new deposit system, return points for cans and PET bottles and cans will be required at grocery retailers with an area of more than 300 m2. In addition the machines will allow the return of beverage containers on a deposit return system.
%22The key to the success of the new deposit return system is for consumers to value and adopt it as their own, which can be achieved by making the system practical and convenient for them to participate in. It is also important to make sure that the collection infrastructure on site is also retailer-friendly,%22 says Roman Postl, managing director of TOMRA Collection Slovakia.
TOMRA has approximately 80,000 reverse vending machines in more than 60 markets worldwide, and collects more than 40 billion containers for recycling each year.
