Švyturys-Utenos alus and Green Genius join forces for new solar power solution in Lithuania

Lithuanian brewer Švyturys-Utenos alus (ŠUA), which is part of the Carlsberg Group, and renewable energy company Green Genius announced that they have signed a groundbreaking power purchase agreement (PPA) for power as a service. As part of the agreement, Green Genius will develop, build, commission and operate two photovoltaic plus storage systems, the first of their kind, in Lithuania.

Specifically, this action will help to promote renewable energy to the brewery, thus covering its entire annual demand with carbon-free electricity. This energy agreement is the first of its kind in Lithuania as well as in the Baltic countries, accelerating progress towards the Carlsberg Group’s ZERO carbon footprint ambition.

The PPA agreement between the two parties linked to Green Genius’ InnoSolveGreen project was recently recognized by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) under the Innovation Fund 2021 Small Scale Call for its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the transition of European industries towards a carbon-free economy.

The project has an initial investment of close to 7.5 million euros, of which 2.6 million euros will be financed by the European Union’s Emissions Trading System Innovation Fund, while Green Genius will provide the rest.

The first system (the so-called on-site system) will be located in the city of Utena, Lithuania, in May 2024, while the second system (the so-called off-site system) will be implemented at a new utility-scale site near the city of Butrimonys, Lithuania, and will begin operations in January 2025.
