Suntory Spirits, part of the Suntory Group of beverage companies, has decided to go for a more environmentally friendly type of aluminum called “green aluminum” in its limited edition The Premium Malt cans. These cans will be available in all stores in Japan starting this month.
A group of companies, including Sumitomo Corporation, Sumisho Metalex Corporation, Kobe Steel and Daiwa Can Company joined forces to produce this new green aluminum material. Specifically, the material was manufactured using the mass balance method, which helps reduce carbon emissions by 25 percent compared to traditional aluminum cans.

Masaaki Fujiwara, the person in charge of sustainability at Suntory, highlighted the collaboration and joint work of five companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the aluminum can production chain.

“We will continue to work with all members of the value chain to promote various initiatives to reduce GHG emissions.” Fujiwara remarked.
According to Suntory’s Environmental Vision, its main objective is to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions throughout its value chain by 2050. In addition, the company has set a target to halve its GHG emissions by 2030.

In addition, Suntory Company implemented the “Suntory Group Plastics Policy” in 2019 with the aim of promoting a society that encourages recycling and reduces carbon emissions.

The beverage company also reported that it will continue to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in all its activities by actively incorporating environmentally friendly materials and packaging, as well as implementing more energy-efficient technologies and using renewable energy sources. This will be applied throughout its production chain to reduce its environmental impact.
