Steel for Packaging (SfPE) has emphasized that food waste generates more greenhouse gases than any country in the world. In this context, it advocates for metal packaging as one of the most effective solutions to preserve food and prevent tons from ending up in the trash.
The organization supports the European Parliament’s measures to reduce this waste, and urges maintaining high ambitions with the upcoming Green Claims Directive, expected in 2025. This regulation aims to protect consumers from misleading environmental claims and promote fairer competition in the market.
SfPE and Metal Packaging Europe (MPE) warn about greenwashing and highlight that the new legislation will ensure more credible environmental claims. To reinforce this position, they commissioned an independent review based on international standards such as ISO 14040-44 and 14026, as well as the future European Directive.
The report concluded that there are limitations in the data and methodologies of some comparisons between packaging types, which can affect their reliability. SfPE and MPE emphasize that misinformation not only confuses consumers but also hinders progress towards true sustainability.
Both organizations call on the industry to communicate with integrity, based on recognized standards. The goal: to empower consumers to make informed and responsible decisions that reinforce trust and respect for the environment.
