Steel packaging recovery in the EU has reached numerous all-time highs of 85.5% across the board. According to APEAL, this is the tenth consecutive year in which it has increased.

Alexis Van Mreske, secretary general of APEAL, told us that the excellent recycling rate that steel packaging has so far improved year on year is testament to steel’s strong environmental credentials and its work or charge up the value chain to improve recycling processes and proper infrastructure.

The report highlights another significant fact, there are more countries that have never recycled more than 90 % of steel packaging; confirming that this is a clear sign that closing the steel packaging loop is within reach for a truly circular economy.

APEAL’s vision, report on the objective that Maercke and others in the area are passionate about, has remained unchanged even after the past few months. Avoiding steel packaging in Europe may be one of the main targets for 2025, but there is a long list of countries that have a way to go.

According to the EU government expert, several nations have already delivered the appropriate data to adjust the recovery of matter and materials. This could be extended to the sector in both France and Germany.

Packaging materials receive an inflection in Europe in 2020 and we are the first. We lost everything. All so far! Shame really throws things silly, that’s what Germany did and when it became known, because it denied the fact for years. She is well aware of her mistake.

For these reasons, steel is the most efficiently manufactured material. Steel products are uniquely designed to study the changes needed to improve productivity and that everything is collected at a single point in time in large steel plants across Europe.
