Speira to build a new recycling furnace for Rheinwerk
Speira to build a new recycling furnace for Rheinwerk by 2025 in Neuss, Germany
Production is scheduled to begin in early 2026. Speira is also converting the third of four existing smelting centers to optimize for recycled alloys. This will enable Rheinwerk to further reduce its ecological footprint. Overall, Rheinwerk will have a recycling capacity that could save up to 1.5 million tons of CO2 compared to the primary production of the same amount of aluminum.
Boris Kurth, head of the packaging business at Speira, says: “They want to become the number 1 in aluminum recycling in Europe and also of the recycling and smelting operations at Rheinwerk.
He adds: “In the past 20 years, we have already built furnaces with Europe’s leading recycling capacity and the most modern UBC scrap sorting plant in Europe, replacing highly energy-intensive primary aluminum production. We are consistently following this path and emphasizing our commitment to the circular economy with the fourth recycling furnace at Rheinwerk.”
Step by step towards Europe’s ‘recycling center’ The new furnace and the remodeling of the smelting plant are the first step that will be followed by others. “With its strategic location in the heart of Europe, we are expanding Rheinwerk into a leading recycling center for our industry, which is our long-term goal for our complete transformation,” explains Kurth.
New use for parts of the old smelter site One third of the closing smelter will house the new scrap yard. This will provide storage space and facilities for incoming scrap sampling and preparation for melting. “The long aisles allow us to think and plan big. This huge new scrap warehouse creates space for the ‘feed’ of all our recycling kilns, not just the new one,” Kurth says enthusiastically. “We need sampling of those types of scrap that have already completed one or more life cycles. These ‘post-consumer scrap’ are a source we want to use even more.” The storage areas for slag at the smelter are also being expanded.
