The multinational Sonoco is a clear example of integration and celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. The company indicated that “At Sonoco, we welcome people of all backgrounds and experiences, and we celebrate these differences. For Hispanic Heritage Month, our employees participated in events focused on honoring the rich history and traditions of Latino culture. From innovations and insights to food, art, music and dance, Latinos have made countless contributions and we are proud and excited to celebrate them, as we believe diversity is what makes Sonoco so special.”

National Hispanic Heritage Month is a period celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States to recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanics in the history, culture and achievements of the United States.

“This month is important because it gives the United States the opportunity to recognize and celebrate members of our communities and their ancestors who hail from Mexico, parts of the Caribbean, Central America, South America and Spain,” they added.

The history of Hispanic Heritage Month dates back to 1968, when the celebration lasted only one week. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law a bill designating the week of September 15 as “National Hispanic Heritage Week”. It wasn’t until nearly 20 years later that Hispanic Heritage Week was lengthened to a full month under President Ronald Reagan.

The specific dates were chosen to coincide with the national independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua recognize September 15 as the date of their independence, while Mexico’s independence is celebrated on September 16 and Chile’s on September 18.
