Born from the collaboration between SONIC Drive-in, a 68-year-old brand powerhouse, and COOP Ale Works, a 12-year-old quality craft brewery, SONIC Hard Seltzer continues to gain a devoted following. In fact, demand for the flavor-packed carbonated beverage has grown from a regional launch in Oklahoma, USA, in May 2021 to retail stores in Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas.
The company has also announced that 22 additional new U.S. states have been added in January and with plans to extend distribution to retail stores to the rest of the country by the end of the year. According to Daniel Mercer, CEO of COOP Ale Works, “SONIC is an enduring brand spanning more than 3,500 stores in 46 states with decades of brand recognition and iconic flavors.”
Mercer further adds that “combine this with our tradition of quality craft beer and brewing excellence and you get a winning combination for a leading strong mineral water entry that is revolutionizing the category and driving extraordinary growth.”
SONIC Hard Seltzer products are packaged in Ardagh Metal Packaging. “The choice of cans was easy, as this is the iconic package for the carbonated water market. Colder, faster, 360-degree bin marking and leading recycling rates and recycled content rates make this the easy choice for environmental and quality superiority for the market and for SONIC,” adds Mercer.
Claude Marbach, managing director of Ardagh Metal Packaging – North America, confirms that carbonated soft drinks are a beverage category that is increasingly relying on cans. “This beverage category continues to grow with predictions placing the mineral water market at 11 billion by 2027. It’s no secret why cans are the answer for this market. In addition to the environmental advantages of packaging, brands also enjoy leading economics in filling, distribution and retail display, as no space is wasted due to the stackability of cans,” he concludes.
