Silgan Containers has announced its decision to close its metal can production plant located in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. According to an official notice issued on May 21, 2025, the closure will affect 56 employees, who will lose their positions starting July 21. The plant will continue to operate at limited capacity until August or even later, while its production will be redistributed among other company facilities.
This measure is part of the operations optimization strategy driven by Silgan Holdings, which also includes the closure of other factories in the United States, such as those located in Mt. Vernon (Missouri) and Waupun (Wisconsin). The objective of these adjustments is to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and strengthen the company’s competitiveness in the metal packaging market.
It’s worth noting that in May 2024, Silgan Containers acquired for $7 million the property that housed its plant in Oconomowoc, known as the Silgan Technology Center. Additionally, the company maintains a presence in other Wisconsin locations such as Menomonee Falls, Mequon, and Kenosha.
Simultaneously, Silgan Holdings has announced additional cuts in other divisions, such as its plastics plant in Hazelwood, Missouri, where 33 workers are expected to be laid off in the first phase of the closure scheduled to be completed in December 2025.
These decisions are part of a broader trend in the packaging sector, characterized by the consolidation of operations in response to the need to adapt to changes in demand and improve the structural efficiency of companies.
