The European Parliament recently adopted the revised Waste Framework Directive, establishing legally binding targets for reducing food waste across the EU for the first time. The measure seeks to encourage the transition to a circular, resource-based economy.

Experts and representatives from the packaging sector, such as Steel for Packaging, have welcomed the decision, although they warn that the European Union could have gone further with its measures. They point out that packaging plays a key role in preventing food waste, and highlight steel packaging as an example: it protects food, prevents spoilage, and can extend shelf life by up to five years without the need for preservatives or refrigeration.

Analysts emphasize that by setting targets at the European level, policymakers create regulatory coherence and encourage innovation. By combining these targets with steel packaging, which offers waste prevention along with infinite recyclability, Europe could accelerate its path towards a more sustainable future.
