Interpack 2023: SACMI leads the European transition to environmentally friendly rigid packaging.
SACMI’s goal: to offer customers cost-effective “green transition” solutions, such as the market-ready products and technologies on display in Düsseldorf. This means solutions for tied closures, but also new internationally certified lightweight neck standards and excellent opportunities on the PET “circularity” front.
New fastening standards, lightweighting and recycling will be the focal points of SACMI at Interpack (Düsseldorf trade fair May 4-10, 2023), with a clear objective: to provide customers with immediate and tangible benefits by taking advantage of green transition opportunities.
How we achieve this
SACMI is the only company in the world to offer solutions for every stage of rigid container production, from the cap to the preform, from stretch blow molding to complete bottling lines.
On the closure manufacturing front, SACMI has already implemented the EU Directive requiring the adoption of the new fastening standard from 2024.
With a complete range of closures and cost-effective methods – such as post-process cutting and integrated quality control – SACMI is ready to respond to market demands and guide the transition.
New ultralight standards
In recent years, few industries have focused as much on sustainability as packaging. As the data clearly show, the weight of containers and closures has been reduced by 50% or more since 2010.
Recent developments in this area include 26/22 mm collars (with the 25/22 variant) and the new 29/25 mm lightened collars, a set of standards on which SACMI Laboratory has developed market-ready solutions that can reduce collar+cap plastic consumption by 30% or more.
Of course, there are challenges, how to successfully make this change while still ensuring an optimal consumer experience. Any examples? The new tethered-friendly GME 30.40 collar plugs and 26/22 water plugs combine increased height with considerable savings in raw materials.
The challenge of circularity
From a 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) perspective, the PET supply chain is best suited to a circular economy approach, from resin recycling to finished packaging for food use. SACMI has therefore long ensured that its preform injection molding presses can process up to 50% PET in the form of recycled flakes, a figure that can be increased to 75% with the latest advances being introduced.
The result: the ability to offer customers an appropriate technological response in markets where the ecological transition is an imperative, at a time when the tools to achieve it – and the existence of a complete recycling chain – are still in their infancy.
Customer Service
Europe may be leading the global packaging industry’s drive towards sustainability, but producers are forced to operate in a “VUCA” (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) environment that places them between stringent regulatory frameworks and the need to remain competitive in global markets in any case.
SACMI’s response is not only technological. It is, above all, about effective assistance and support to the customer: from the “idea” of the product to the technologies needed to manufacture it, from the renewal/improvement of the efficiency of existing solutions to the implementation of new production standards, processes and raw materials. In short, SACMI offers complete solutions for producers to address the transition with the right tools, such as next-generation vision systems, where AI unlocks enormous potential for plant control while improving ease of use.
Latest from SACMI Packaging & Chocolate
Solutions on display at the show will also include SACMI Packaging & Chocolate’s range of machines and plants for processing and packaging chocolate and other food and non-food products. At the SACMI Packaging & Chocolate booth, Interpack visitors will be able to enjoy “experiential tours” focused on specific aspects of the industry: chocolate processing and molding, chocolate packaging, packaging for other industries.
SACMI Packaging & Chocolate is known for its high levels of automation, extraordinary versatility and unparalleled productivity: no wonder, as its brands have been leading European and international markets for over 110 years. Electronically controlled drive systems, low maintenance, fast machine start-up and a multi-style, multi-format approach are just some of the plus points of the current SACMI Packaging & Chocolate range: a range designed to meet the growing demand for versatile chocolate processing and traditional/flowpack secondary packaging solutions.
