Russia’s RUSAL, the world’s leading aluminum producer, has announced that five of its smelters have received Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certification. This certification confirms that eighteen of RUSAL’s facilities follow the performance and chain of custody standards established by ASI.

Aluminum smelters located in Novokuznetsk, Volgograd and Taishet, as well as Rheinfelden enterprises engaged in the manufacture of aluminum alloys and semi-trailers, have been certified after passing a successful audit conducted by BUREAU VERITAS CERTIFICATION RUS. These independent audits were conducted by a third party to verify compliance of the operations with the required standards.

Globally, the ASI Performance Standard is considered to be the only standard that focuses on the sustainability of the entire aluminum supply chain. Its development has been the result of collaboration between industry, intermediaries and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). This standard addresses 11 criteria that include aspects related to business ethics, governance, environment, human rights and social practices.

The ASI organization has created a Chain of Custody Standard to support companies involved in the production and distribution of aluminum that seek to provide their customers and other stakeholders with independent confirmation of accountability in their process.

Despite the instability in global markets, RUSAL remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainable development and pays special attention to maintaining responsible relationships with its employees, suppliers, consumers and residents of the regions where it operates. In addition, the expansion of its ASI-certified facilities demonstrates its success in implementing environmental, social and governance best practices. This was stated by Evgenii Nikitin, general director of RUSAL.

Since 2015, RUSAL has been part of the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative International (ASI) and has been steadily obtaining certifications for its assets since 2019.
