RUSAL APPROVES CLIMATE TARGETS FOR 2032 AND 2050
The Board of Directors of RUSAL, one of the world’s leading aluminum producers, approved the updated Climate Strategy up to 2032 with an outlook to 2050.
The updated Climate Strategy was adopted at the RUSAL Board meeting held in Krasnoyarsk. The Strategy comprises two scenarios, basic and intensive, which define a strict framework for achieving the company’s decarbonization objectives.
Under the most conservative baseline scenario, RUSAL intends to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions intensity per ton of metal from all production facilities by at least 25% by 2032, and by at least 47% by 2050, compared to 2018, excluding the effect of carbon neutralization projects.
The company is working hard to achieve its goals and objectives set out in its action plan, developing and implementing advanced electrolysis technologies to increase energy efficiency in all production processes as well as switching businesses to carbon-free renewable energy sources and including the principles governing a circular economy in the program.
“It is important that all the goals announced in our Climate Strategy are related to technological decarbonization projects, including one of RUSAL’s key projects – the ecological modernization of the largest Siberian aluminum smelters, which is important not only for a fundamental improvement in the quality of life in the cities of the Company’s responsibility, but also as our contribution to the fight against global climate change. “, concluded Evgenii Nikitin, CEO of RUSAL.
