Rio Tinto announced that it will allocate A$75 million over the next ten years to renew its partnerships with the Ashburton Shire and the city of Karratha to continue the development of important community projects in both regions.
Over the past 10 years, previous agreements that the Community Infrastructure and Services Partnership (CISP) had towards the Shire and the City supported key local projects for the communities in the areas of infrastructure and utilities. With these partnerships renewed and strengthened, Rio Tinto, which is the local government partner, has a better relationship with local authorities.
Richard Cohen, general manager of Port, Rail & Core Services at Rio Tinto, said, “We want the area to be vibrant and healthy so we can attract people to live, work and walk there so they feel part of that and not just us.”
“We are very proud of what we have achieved together in the last 10 years thanks to the shared team. Let’s hope to continue like this, taking a step forward, and not going backwards like others,” Jarquin said.
The Australian mining group Rio Tinto is committed to being a good neighbor and this commitment began with maintaining a connection with the communities where it works and does business. By renewing its 10-year partnership with the Shire of Ashburton and the City of Karratha, it demonstrates that it has a continuing interest in making a difference in raising environmental awareness today.
The chairman of the Shire of Ashburton, Kerry White, acknowledged that they had had significant success with their partnership with Rio Tinto over the past 10 years.
“The partnership with Rio Tinto has enabled the shire to deliver a range of events, activities and key infrastructure services to the communities of Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Pannawonica. In our unique environment, we believe that opportunity can be found everywhere; we focus on building active, vibrant communities that value their opportunities. That is why we add value to the physical and mental health of our people,” he concluded.
Partnerships with the City of Karratha and the Shire of Ashburton have made important projects for community welfare. Among them are constructions that support technological, educational and social projects that will benefit the population.
