The multinational company Rio Tinto expresses its solidarity with the war in Ukraine caused by the Russian invasion. The company has announced that it will allocate $5 million for humanitarian aid for the Ukrainian population.
Specifically, the donation will go to humanitarian agencies providing support to the most vulnerable people in the conflict zone and to those fleeing Ukraine assisting people trapped in or fleeing the conflict. A donation that will match those made in the rest of the company’s branches worldwide.
The company notes that while Rio Tinto has no operating assets or employees located in Russia or Ukraine, “we have team members of Ukrainian and Russian descent with loved ones who have been affected and we offer our support to them as well.”
“We are also actively reviewing any existing trade links with Russia in our global business and are closely monitoring the situation, including the implications of trade sanctions which we are committed to complying with. Queensland Alumina Limited, a joint venture with Russian-based aluminum producer Rusal, is currently not subject to sanctions. We are working to ensure that the company continues to operate as an important employer and contributor to the local Gladstone community and the Queensland economy,” added company sources.
