Industry leader in responsible aluminum production, Rio Tinto has commissioned a new remelting furnace at its Laterrière plant, which will add 22,000 metric tons of recycling capacity to its aluminum operations in the Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec.

The remelting furnace is equipped with highly efficient burners to minimize its carbon footprint. The project has created seven new jobs. The project, with an investment of around $8.4 million, was completed over two years to offer rolled products customers in the North American automotive and packaging industries a new sustainable sourcing solution that combines recycled and low-carbon aluminum.

Rio Tinto Aluminium’s Managing Director of Atlantic Operations, Sébastien Ross, highlights that “aluminum is 100% recyclable and the demand for recycled metal is continuously growing. With the commissioning of our new remelting furnace, we now offer our customers an additional solution to recycle scrap from their manufacturing processes into high-quality, low-carbon aluminum alloys. Rio Tinto will continue to work closely with our customers and partners to support the transition to a circular economy.”
