Rio Tinto and AMG Metals & Materials (AMG M&M) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly evaluate a low-carbon aluminum project in India, powered by renewable energy. AMG M&M was created by the founders of Greenko and AM Green.
Both companies will study the possibility of developing an integrated plant that includes a primary aluminum smelter with a capacity of up to one million tons per year and an alumina production of two million tons, using wind and solar energy backed by hydroelectric storage. Initially, a pilot phase of 500,000 tons of annual capacity will be evaluated at a strategic location in the country.
According to Jérôme Pécresse, CEO of Rio Tinto Aluminium, this analysis represents a key step in expanding their low-emission aluminum production, exploring new models in emerging markets like India, which offers favorable conditions for this type of initiative.
As part of the study, AMG M&M will work with Greenko on a firm renewable energy solution, while Rio Tinto will focus on the alumina component. Various smelting technologies will also be reviewed to identify the most efficient and cost-effective option.
For his part, Mahesh Kolli, President of AMG M&M and Greenko Group, highlighted that this agreement expands their decarbonization solutions offering towards materials, with the potential to supply sectors such as automotive, construction, and packaging, supporting sustainable supply chains globally.
