Recycling wins the day: 21% increase in aluminum packaging reuse according to the UK Environment Agency
The UK Environment Agency recently announced that aluminum packaging recycling has seen a significant increase in the third quarter of 2023, with a 21% increase compared to the same period in 20221. This increase is a positive indication of the continued commitment to sustainability and the circular economy.
Aluminum is a valuable material that can be infinitely recycled without losing its quality2. Increased recycling rates not only help conserve natural resources, but also reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of new aluminum.
According to data from the National Packaging Waste Database (NPWD) by the Environment Agency (EA), aluminum packaging recycling volumes in the UK have shown an impressive increase in 2023 compared to 2022 figures.
In the first quarter alone, 40,478 tons of aluminum containers were collected for recycling, a year-on-year increase of 14%1. Of this volume, 28,850 tons were ‘actively’ recycled by consumers through curbside, bring and on-the-go systems (+14% year-on-year), while 11,323 were recovered from incinerator bottom ash (IBA), with a tonnage increase of +20% year-on-year.
In these months of the year, a total of 60,621 tons have been caught throughout the nation, representing an increase of 13% compared to the same period last year (53,725).
