The recycling industry in Chile generates more than 17,000 direct jobs, reported Antonia Biggs Fuenzalida, general manager of the National Association of the Recycling Industry A.G. (ANIR), during a virtual talk aimed at Business Engineering students from the University of Valparaíso, Santiago Campus.
In the conference, titled “The recycling industry in Chile, present and future,” the executive detailed the operation of the sector, the main materials that can be recycled, prominent examples, and concrete applications in the manufacture of products. She also addressed the impacts of the Extended Producer Responsibility Law (REP Law) and business opportunities for entrepreneurs and new companies.
Biggs highlighted that ANIR currently groups more than 60 companies, which manage around five million tons of waste per year and generate 15,700 direct jobs. She also emphasized that recycled materials are not only reused to produce similar goods, such as aluminum cans or plastic bottles, but are also applied in infrastructure, including roads, airports, stadiums, and playgrounds.
