The Commercial manager of Novelis in Chile has announced that the market for recycled aluminum cans grew by 12% in the last year in this country. On the other hand, it is projected that by 2030 the amount of cans available for recycling could reach 33 kilo tons, which would represent an economic value of 31 million dollars per year, if recycled.

These data were presented at the seminar “Cans on the Move, for Responsible Recycling”. The event brought together leaders from the public and private sectors, key players in the recycling industry and authorities, who discussed the future of aluminum recycling in Chile and the importance of strategic alliances to promote the circular economy.

At the beginning of the day, the head of the Regional Government’s Development and Industry Division, Fernando Court, highlighted the Santiago government’s commitment to the transition to a circular economy, highlighting initiatives such as the Santiago Circular Challenge and the Circular Industry Platform, which seek to promote sustainable practices in the region.

The director of the Santiago Circular Challenge Program and director of Technology Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Universidad Mayor, Nancy Fuentes, invited companies to learn about and join this collaborative network to promote circular development.

Nicolás Fernández, president of the National Association of the Recycling Industry (ANIR) and General Manager of Metalum, gave a brief introduction to the REP Law and its impact on the recycling market in Chile, highlighting the structural changes that this legislation will bring in the coming years.

Alfredo Veiga, Novelis’ Vice President of Procurement for South America, presented the company’s impact in Latin America, highlighting that in Brazil the can recycling rate has remained above 95%, thanks to the company’s work. He also commented that 80% of the aluminum that Novelis sells to the manufacturing industry comes from recycled cans.
