A new company called Recycap, located in Valencia, has created a technology that uses a mechanical system to separate the coffee capsule and grounds automatically. This allows both elements to be correctly recycled through the usual containers, solving one of the main challenges of the coffee industry.

The Spanish start-up company has created and commercialized the REACT system to facilitate recycling, thanks to funding provided by Veos Ventures, S.L. In Spain, it is estimated that more than 5 million coffee capsules are used every day, but unfortunately only 10% are recycled.

There is a new technology called Recycap® Technoogies S.L. that allows easy and automatic recycling of coffee capsules. This Spanish startup intends to launch its innovative and pioneering REACTTM technology to the market with the help of an investment of up to 400,000 euros from the US-Spanish accelerator fund Veos Ventures, S.L.

The popularity of coffee capsules has increased considerably in Western Europe and North America, being an increasingly popular option for preparing high quality coffee from the comfort of the home. In commercial terms, its volume has experienced exponential growth, generating a profit of US$9.92 billion in 2021 and projected to reach US$12.33 billion in 2022. Worldwide, some 39,000 capsules are produced per minute and in Spain alone more than 5 million capsules are used daily. Unfortunately, only 10% of these capsules are recycled, resulting in 25 tons being sent to landfills every day without the possibility of being reused.

REACT™ is an innovative technology developed by Recycap® Technologies, founded by entrepreneurs Eduardo Pérez, Vicente Oller and Constantino Llobel Durá. This technology allows users to recycle their aluminum coffee capsules at home or at the workplace, and dispose of empty capsules in the usual recycling garbage cans thanks to Recycap’s automated system.

Also, Recycap® Technologies has developed a technology called REACT™ that allows the elimination of coffee capsule grounds, thus facilitating the recycling process. This technology uses a mechanical system to clean the coffee from the capsules, leaving them empty and ready to be recycled. With this, Recycap® devices have become innovative and automated solutions for recycling in both households and businesses.

The funding obtained will be used to start production of commercial-size Recycap® recycling machines, launch them in the market and establish partnerships with other companies in the industry. In addition, it will also go towards the creation of a coffee machine for home use using REACT™ technology. Recycap® Technologies is collaborating with well-known coffee brands and retailers to implement point-of-sale recycling programs, especially for capsules made of aluminum.

According to the creators of Recycap® Technologies, their REACT™ platform allows businesses and consumers to recycle their coffee capsules from the comfort of their homes or offices. This process also helps to reduce environmental impact by allowing clean capsules to be disposed of in regular recycling garbage cans. The company prides itself on its commitment to the environment and constantly seeks new and patented ways to reduce its ecological footprint by introducing recycling technologies for aluminum and coffee grounds to the market.
