Quad R Materials, founded in 2023 by Ray Hoffman, Subodh Das, and Michael Pambiachi, has launched an innovative project to recover valuable materials—such as used aluminum cans (UBCs)—that currently end up in landfills. Their goal is to free up space, reduce environmental impact, and reintroduce this waste into the circular economy.

The proposal involves installing recovery systems in active or closed landfills to excavate, sort, and process waste with commercial value. In the U.S. alone, it is estimated that more than 2.8 million tons of aluminum cans reach landfills each year, despite the growing demand for recycled aluminum.

The Quad R team is made up of experts in engineering, recycling, and industrial development. The project already has permits in North Carolina, where tests have been carried out with the interest of major recycled aluminum producers.

Challenges include the high cost of equipment and resistance from the sector. Even so, the company predicts that this strategy will become standard in the U.S. in the coming years.
