Re-turn, operator of Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme, has partnered with professional organizer Sarah Reynolds, founder of Organised Chaos, to share practical tips on storing plastic bottles and cans in the home.

Research from Re-turn revealed that three out of five people wait until their designated bag is full of plastic bottles and cans before disposing of them at their local Deposit Return Point. With this in mind, Sarah has provided storage tricks for cans and bottles, no matter the size of the space. With the September routine in full swing, she also shares some ideas on how to incorporate the return of your plastic bottles and cans into your routine.

Dedicate a “landing spot” for plastic bottles and cans every time you consume a beverage, usually at home or in the car. Reynolds remembers to never crush or compress containers, as the bar code must be legible, and limits storage to beverage containers only, which now feature the Re-turn logo.

For small spaces, consider a container or box in a corner of the counter that works well for collecting plastic bottles and cans. You can lift and carry the box to empty at the Deposit Return Point or transfer the contents to a bag and leave the storage container on the counter if you’re concerned it won’t return to its landing spot.

For those who prefer to store plastic bottles and cans in the car, consider installing an organizer in the trunk or a simple large box to use as dedicated storage space outside the home.
