The 15th International Conference on Aluminum – INALCO 2023 will take place from October 11 to 13 at the Centre des congrès de Québec. So far, some 200 attendees from 14 countries have been confirmed to learn about the latest results of applied research in the use of aluminum both in Quebec and around the world.
Specifically, INALCO will present its innovative sustainable aluminum solutions in transportation and civil construction applications. It is worth mentioning that this renowned conference has been held since 1979, with the last two editions held in Tokyo, Japan in 2019 and Naples, Italy in 2016.
The Aluminum Research Center, together with REGAL and AluQuébec, are organizing an event called INALCO that will bring together leading figures such as academics, researchers and industrialists to discuss aluminum issues. In addition, a scientific committee made up of researchers and engineers from different countries will also provide support.

INALCO will also provide an opportunity to learn about the latest trends and innovations in the use of aluminum through technical sessions focused on design, forming, welding and joining, alloys, surface treatment and environmental impact. In addition, the importance of green aluminum in the industry will be highlighted with the presence of twelve invited experts who will give plenary lectures on various topics.

This event will be attended by a large group of experts. Vincent Christ is an important member of the Canadian company ELYSIS, which is playing a key role in the aluminum decarbonization process. Tao Wang, Rio Tinto’s representative in the United States, spoke about the future of sustainable aluminum and stressed the importance of connecting all the players in the value chain in this process.

Philippe Gosselin and Félix Lapointe, both from Ferreol (Canada), have developed a new blend of aluminum alloy and scandium to manufacture high performance skis for alpine sports. A team consisting of Geir Ringen of NTNU and Trond Furu of Hydro in Norway have investigated large suspension bridges made of aluminum, analyzing their ambitions, opportunities and challenges. In his talk, entitled ’10 modern applications and construction details for aluminum bridges’, Benoit Cusson of Canada’s WSP will address the latest trends in bridge construction using this material.

Laurent Chappuis of Light Metal Consultants, LLC in the United States discussed the use of aluminum in body sheet manufacturing in North America following the launch of the Ford F-150 in 2015.

Following the custom of the conference, INALCO 2023 will have a gala dinner with the participation of the Honorable Senator Rosa Galvez of Canada as a special guest. In addition, the event will include a presentation led by Patrice Painchaud, internationally known for his shows that have impressed numerous convention attendees.

The next edition of INALCO will be held in conjunction with the 20th REGAL Student Day, an annual event in which PhD and Master’s students present the results of their research on aluminum in the form of scientific posters. According to Houshang Alamdari, director of REGAL, this event provides a unique opportunity for students to interact with industry and the international scientific community. Combining it with INALCO further expands this global scientific community. “It is a unique platform to enable aspiring researchers to dialogue directly with industrialists and the scientific community. The combination of GAL Student Day and INALCO 2023 extends this scientific community on an international scale,” said Alamdari.

On the other hand, François Racine, CEO of AluQuébec added that “INALCO is a privileged networking environment to stimulate collaboration between companies and researchers. For example, a company that has a project that requires research and development can find an existing solution to advance the project or, at the very least, can get in touch with key players that can help with its development.”

Without a doubt, INALCO 2023 is an important international aluminum event not to be missed this year, providing numerous opportunities for industrialists, research and development professionals, marketing, sales and human resources managers, aluminum industry leaders, students and academics. This conference is aimed at all those interested in this industry.
