After meeting the standards and requirements necessary to obtain positive ratings from ASI (Aluminum Stewardship Initiative), Aludium’s Amorebieta plant has received a visit from ASI. Fiona Solomon, ASI’s CEO, along with her management team, visited Aludium’s Amorebieta plant as part of their tour of Spain. The purpose of the visit was to gain an in-depth understanding of sustainability and innovation in the company’s aluminum value chain.
In 2022, the Amorebieta and Alicante plants obtained the ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) standard for the first time, certifications that join the ASI Performance Standard (PS) already held by Aludium’s three sites. Currently, the Castelsarrasin plant has completed the CoC audit and is on track to be certified in due course.
This meeting comes at a key moment in Aludium’s consolidation of its sustainable performance. In 2022, the Amorebieta and Alicante plants obtained the ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) standard for the first time, certifications that join the ASI Performance Standard (PS) already held by the company’s three sites.
Following the visit, Fiona Solomon stated, “The tour provided us with a solid understanding of the processes involved in the production of rolled aluminum and the quality and safety aspects that are integrated throughout the facility. The tour has provided us with valuable information about the plant’s capabilities and how the policies and processes align with ASI’s certification objectives and criteria.”
“We were pleased to learn that Aludium has a range of low-carbon products at levels that are in line with the ASI Performance Standard criteria, and that the company has made transparency of its emissions data a priority. We also appreciated hearing about the company’s target setting to reduce the average carbon footprint per tonne by 50% by 2025, along with investments in recycling capacity and efficiency, and plans to increase renewable electricity consumption to 100%.”Solomon added.
Lionel Chapis, CEO of Aludium, expressed his enthusiasm after the productive meeting. “We are happy to welcome ASI to our Amorebieta plant. We believe it is important for certification bodies to continuously maintain contact with “real life”. In recent years we have spent many hours on ASI-related aspects and it is good to see the people behind this and to have the opportunity for direct exchange and feedback,” said Chapis.
Obtaining ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) certification, the most important standard in terms of sustainability along the entire aluminum value chain, allows the company to adopt a much more transversal approach, aligned with sustainability, as it defines the requirements for materials to flow along the value chain, from recycling to the final product, in order to ensure sustainable production.
“The PS and CoC certification help us to have a more structural approach to many sustainability-related aspects. This also covers a better understanding of the relevant KPIs and the corresponding targets,” revealed the Aludium manager. “While sustainability is a fundamental part of Aludium’s strategy, ASI provides a clear structure and certification provides good visibility in the market. Being a member of ASI and obtaining certification for PS and CoC is a clear commitment to our stakeholders that we take the sustainable development of the company, processes and product offering very seriously.”Chapis added.
Aludium’s good governance has been endorsed by ASI certification among others, such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 18001, IATF 16949 and ISO 50001. The company also evaluates other factors related to environmental sustainability that were subject to testing during the audits. Thanks to Aludium’s ethical and responsible commitment, these measures aimed at climate transition, gender equality and total carbon footprint measurement, among other actions, were intensified in 2022.
They also created a new aluminum called ‘Aludium Eco’ that has an external certification in sustainable terms, which shows the great social commitment and impact that this company has had in recent years.
