Portugal will initiate its deposit return scheme in 2006, according to a recent announcement. SDR Portugal will be responsible for the system administration, while Sensoneo has been chosen as the technology solutions provider, expanding its role as a key partner in DRS programs across Europe.
As the first Southern European country to implement a large-scale DRS, Portugal positions itself as a leader in sustainability. Although Malta pioneered in the Mediterranean with its launch in 2022, Portugal’s implementation is expected to serve as a model for neighboring countries like Spain, France, and Italy. This initiative aligns with Portugal’s historical reputation for innovation and exploration, reinforcing its commitment to circular economy principles.
A key feature of the DRS in Portugal is the inclusion of the HoReCa sector (hotels, restaurants, and catering). Building on Malta’s experience, where HoReCa establishment participation improved collection rates, Sensoneo will optimize the system to maximize efficiency in Portugal.
With a population and retail landscape similar to other European countries with successful DRS programs, Portugal is expected to establish between 7,000 and 10,000 collection points. This extensive network will provide convenient access for consumers, supporting higher recycling rates and a more sustainable waste management system.
