Poland has implemented a national deposit return system (DRS) for beverage containers, which took effect on October 1, 2025. This system aims to increase the recycling and reuse of packaging, aligning with the European Union’s circular economy goals.
The system is planned for covered packaging and applies to plastic (PET) bottles up to 3 liters, metal cans up to 1 liter, and reusable glass bottles up to 1.5 liters. A deposit of PLN 0.50 (approximately €0.12) is charged for plastic and metal containers, and PLN 1 (approximately €0.22) for glass bottles. Containers subject to the system must bear a specific logo indicating the deposit and its value. In addition, consumers can return the containers to participating stores or automatic return machines, without needing to present a purchase receipt.
Exceptions
The system does not apply to packaging for dairy products, such as milk or yogurt, or to single-use glass packaging. In addition, some alcoholic beverage containers, such as small liquor bottles, are excluded from the system.
Poland’s Ministry of Climate and Environment is finalizing amendments to the 2023 legislation to clarify rules on authorizations, labeling, and industry concerns, such as exemptions for dairy packaging and the introduction of a harmonized labeling system. The system also aims to achieve a collection rate of 77% in 2026 and 90% by 2029.
