COCA-COLA SWEDEN PILOTS GLACIAL REFILLABLE ALUMINIUM CONTAINERS

The multinational Coca-Cola has carried out a pilot test of refillable beverage solutions in Sweden with the collaboration of the beverage packaging brand GLACIAL. Specifically, the test is being carried out in the PBX store, the ‘living lab’ of the Reitan Convenience in Stockholm.

The new proposition allows consumers to buy or bring their own beverage containers to fill, choosing from more than 60 flavors of Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, FuzeTea and Smartwater brands, most of which are unpackaged. PBX consumers can also purchase GLACIAL refillable beverage containers as they stay cold for up to 12 hours. They will analyse consumer behaviours in refilling beverage containers over and over again, and understand the potential of refillable containers to reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

Lisa Wahlström, Sustainability Director at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners in Sweden says: %22Our packaging accounts for the majority of our emissions. We therefore need to find innovative solutions so that consumers can continue to enjoy our beverages while reducing the amount of packaging.

%22Packaging accounts for more than 40% of our carbon emissions and we have an ambition to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. We are therefore working hard to find innovative solutions. We see great opportunities with refillable solutions and are very excited to test our new concept together with GLACIAL at PBX,%22 adds Wahlström.

In 2020, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners launched a group-wide climate strategy with the ambition of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. Coca-Cola in Sweden was also the first market in the world to switch to a PET portfolio produced from 100% recycled plastic and the Jordbro plant became one of the first two in the group to receive climate neutrality certification under the PAS 2060 standard earlier this year.
