The brand Procter & Gamble (P&G) has announced a voluntary recall of products such as spray dry conditioner and spray dry shampoo, due to the possible presence of benzene. P&G notes however that to date, it has not received any negative reports and is carrying out the recall as a precaution.

The recall includes products from Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences and Waterl, all of which are made in the USA. Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally or through the skin and can result in cancer.

Based on risk assessments published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in P&G’s testing is not expected to result in adverse health consequences.

Following several recent reports indicating traces of benzene in some aerosol products, P&G initiated a review of its entire portfolio. While benzene is not an active ingredient in any of their products, the company’s review showed that the unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant.
