Swedish aluminum rolling mill Gränges AB has announced that a fire broke out at its cold rolling production plant currently under construction in Konin, Poland. Part of the equipment was damaged, but no injuries were reported in the fire.
The production equipment had not yet started up, so Gränges does not expect a drop in plant production as a result of the fire. However, plans to start up equipment and ramp up production at Konin that were originally planned for the second half of this year were postponed to next year.
In addition, Gränges expects sales volumes in the second half of the year to be lower than in the current quarter. Despite strong worldwide demand for aluminum products, Gränges says the COVID-19 blockade in Shanghai, China, will reduce sales over the next few months.
The Konin plant was commissioned in 1966 and has a rated capacity of 100 thousand metric tons of rolled aluminum per year. With DC casting, hot rolling, cold rolling and finishing equipment, Konin’s plant serves the automotive, specialty packaging, electronics and general coil and sheet markets.
