The U.S. Senate is once again debating the Steward Act, which seeks to boost recycling and waste reduction, following the failure of previous attempts in the House of Representatives. The proposal includes initiatives such as the RIAA (Recycling Industry Operating Standard) a set of guidelines and standards for packaging recycling operations and the Recycling and Composting Accountability Act.
In a context of budget cuts for the EPA, legislators highlight the economic benefit of strengthening the recycling infrastructure, especially in rural areas, reducing dependence on imports of recyclable materials such as aluminum.
Companies such as Kraft Heinz, SC Johnson and Ball support the initiative, highlighting the need to improve flexible packaging management and increase access to recycling. The Plastics Industry Association and other industry groups also support the project, seeing it as key to moving toward a circular economy and strengthening the U.S. manufacturing industry.
In addition, other related legislative proposals have been introduced, such as the Goodbye Foam Act, focused on eliminating certain plastics.
