A modern touch for an original and at the same time healthy breakfast. This is the original proposal of the New York startup Ottherworld, which has launched a new line of plant-based pancake and waffle mixes. Founders Jennifer Ballen and Joseph Magliano drove the business to develop products that were good for the consumer and good for the planet.

The couple partnered with chefs and a dietician to find a formula that had no added sugars, dairy, nuts or soy. Varieties include original, with dates and zucchini; banana chocolate chip, which has cauliflower; cinnamon apple, with sweet potato; and chocolate, with beet, reishi and cocoa.

This startup, backed by Anheuser-Busch InBev, turns grain saved from brewing into flour. Another supplier is Outcast Foods, which collects rejected, irregular and surplus produce from farmers, grocers and food manufacturers to create dry powders. It has a patented drying process that retains 99% of the nutrition, and this process is also environmentally friendly.

Ballen, executive director, details that nine of its different ingredients come from food sources that would otherwise have been wasted. “We continue to add more and more recycled ingredients to our supply chain, and we are excited to address food waste through the products we sell,” he adds.

Otherworld’s blends are packaged in recyclable tin cans, an environmentally friendly option that stands out from the usual assortment in grocery stores. “We love the fact that our product is different from what you see on the shelf,” concludes Ballen.
