The U.S. DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) has announced that its $500 million grant to Century Aluminum to build the first new primary aluminum smelter plant is officially “awarded”. This is the first plant to be built in this country in decades. Therefore, the contract is signed and the project can begin.

This follows the announcement of several grants for the aluminum industry by DOE last spring, demonstrating bipartisan support and recognition of the critical role aluminum plays in the U.S. economy and national defense.
