Novelis has successfully tested the use of hydrogen as fuel in a recycling furnace at its plant in Latchford, UK. This experiment is part of a British government decarbonization program and was conducted in collaboration with Progressive Energy. Hydrogen replaces natural gas, reducing CO2e emissions by up to 90%.

The project, which prioritized safety, included tests with hydrogen and natural gas mixtures to evaluate their impact on existing infrastructure and equipment. Tons of aluminum scrap were melted and cast, and parameters such as the impact on the product and emissions were monitored.

This pilot is part of the UK government’s Industrial Fuel Switching program, which received a grant of £4.6 million. Novelis is also investing in expanding its beverage can recycling capacity in Latchford, aiming to increase recycling by 85 kilotonnes annually and reduce emissions by 350,000 tons per year.

As part of its 3×30 vision, Novelis aims to increase recycled content to 75%, reduce emissions to less than three tons of CO2e per ton of aluminum, and become carbon neutral by 2050.
