Novelis has launched a new recycling center in Ulsan, South Korea. This facility is part of its strategy to move towards more circular and sustainable production in the region.

The center has the capacity to process up to 100,000 tons of low-carbon aluminum ingots annually, using scrap from various sectors, such as beverage cans, automotive parts, and industrial materials. This initiative is part of a $65 million investment started in 2022, in collaboration with the Japanese company Kobe Steel through the joint plant Ulsan Aluminum.

In addition to the center already operating in Yeongju —the largest aluminum can recycling plant in Asia— the new facility raises Novelis’ total recycling capacity in Korea to 470,000 tons annually.

According to the company, recycling in Ulsan will avoid the emission of about 420,000 tons of CO₂ per year, a figure equivalent to the absorption capacity of approximately 19 million trees. Aluminum recycling can reduce emissions by up to 95% compared to production from virgin materials, without compromising the quality of the final product.

Sachin Satpute, President of Novelis Asia, emphasized that this center represents “a strategic investment to respond to the growing demand for sustainable and low-emission aluminum in sectors such as beverage packaging, automotive, and specialized products”. He also reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding the use of recycled aluminum as a way to accelerate the transition to a circular economy, both within the industry and among its customers.
