The multinational company Novelis Inc, a leading provider of sustainable aluminum solutions and a world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, announced a new investment. Specifically, the Italian town of Pieve Emanuele will be the new location for the construction of its first solar park at the company’s production site in Italy. The large solar park, whose surface area exceeds 28,000 square meters, will begin construction later this year. To implement this ambitious project, Novelis will spend some $2.4 million on decarbonizing its production in Pieve, with the aim of further developing sustainable, low-carbon aluminum solutions for the European market.

The solar farm’s annual output of around 4,000 MWh will enable the plant to switch a large portion of its energy sources from carbon-intensive to renewable, while decreasing its dependence on external energy sources. The extra energy produced will be used to supply nearby towns.

“Further increasing our capabilities to supply aluminum produced with a lower CO2 footprint will also enable us to help our customers reduce their Scope 3 emissions and meet their decarbonization goals. Investing in renewable energy generation is crucial to decarbonizing our operations and meeting our sustainability goals,” said Emilio Braghi, executive vice president of Novelis Inc. and president of Novelis Europe.

Located in the south of Milan, Novelis’ Pieve plant is an ideal place to build a solar park, as it has a large vacant area with high sun exposure. The project is also expected to reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2026 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
