Habitat for Humanity, a Nebraska organization, received the Novelis Can award for the second consecutive year. The Grand Island community came together to collect a whopping 18,000 pounds of aluminum cans distributed to 14 different locations.

Alyssa Heagy, executive director of Grand Island Area Habitat of Humanity, explained the harsh reality of inflation that affects the agency’s supporters, and how donating aluminum cans helps not only for recycling but also to build affordable housing in Grand Island.

Every time a penny is donated in aluminum to Habitat for Humanity, the end result translates into 68 cents for the foundation. “What we were able to do is use the money that comes in each month from Kramer’s with the aluminum recycling program combined with the grant and it’s enough money to pay for half of one of the houses,” Heagy said.

“We’re taking on urban areas, we’re taking on small rural areas, and we’re showing that when a community comes together and if it’s just one can, it really adds up to have a lasting impact.”
