North Yorkshire Council is working with Podback, a coffee pod recycling service, to enable residents to take their coffee pods to household waste recycling centers (HWRCs).

Used coffee capsules are accepted, as well as tea, milk and hot chocolate capsules. Plastic or aluminum capsules must be collected separately, as they are recycled at separate facilities. As part of the scheme, the capsules will be sent to specialized recycling plants and transformed into new products such as packaging, automotive components and building products.

Coffee grounds will be treated by anaerobic digestion to create soil improvers and renewable energy. Executive Member for Waste Services, Councilman Greg White, has said that: coffee lovers can enjoy coffee knowing that their capsules will be turned into new products, renewable energy and soil improvers.”

Rick Hindley, Podback’s CEO, added that the company’s intention is to make recycling as simple as possible.

Podback is a not-for-profit recycling service, set up and funded by the UK’s leading coffee capsule systems NESCAFE Dolce Gusto, Tassimo and Nespresso, and over 25 national coffee capsule brands and retailers. All capsules collected by Podback are recycled in the UK.
