Beiersdorf has increased the amount of recycled aluminum in its NIVEA Creme can to a minimum of 80%. This measure is expected to reduce 8,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent between now and 2025.
Isabell Niggeman, Purchasing commented that: “this important change was made possible through intensive collaboration with our long-term supplier and partner, Novelis.”
The goal of achieving a 100% recycled aluminum can has not yet been achieved because, according to Philip Helm of the packaging department, there is insufficient availability of the recycled material.“We must be able to ensure a consistent process at the supplier and at our own production site here in Hamburg.
But yes, I can imagine achieving 100% recycled aluminum in the future, as we will continue to work on the topic of sustainability, also together with our suppliers.”
When properly sorted and recycled, aluminum can remain in the materials cycle almost indefinitely without significant degradation of its properties and quality-Helm assures Helm-“Therefore, aluminum is truly the ideal material for a circular economy.”
Holger Dede of Beiersdorf Manufacturing Hamburg explained the challenge of having recycled aluminum available in the quantities needed for a product that is sold globally, “it has been a challenge to identify the right alloy to suit our machines and processes in the factory. It has been a trial and error phase that lasted several months until we found the best fit and adapted our processes to the new material.”
Dede added that it was also a bit tricky to print the organic claim on the can in the correct format.
Before the relaunch of NIVEA Creme, it looked the same all over the world.
