In the 1960s, a discovery was made that would revolutionize the world of cans: An American engineer was tired of having to resort to sharp objects when he forgot the key to open his beer, so he invented a handle made of aluminum to facilitate the process. The system quickly became popular with all producers of beer and soft drinks. In the beginning, those rings were known as ‘pull-tabs’, they were pulled until they were ripped off.
Years after the invention of the metal rings, a solution was found to the problem they caused when they rolled on the floor. This was especially annoying in coastal areas where many people walked barefoot and were victims of unpleasant tripping. As there was no environmental awareness yet, it was decided to innovate by creating a new version of the aluminum ring that would always be fixed and would not cause problems. This is known as a fixed ring.
However, human inventiveness knows no bounds and has found a whole range of uses for can rings. Their applications in the closet are especially well known: they can be used to chain hangers and take up less space on the rod, as belts and even as earrings or ornaments, the possibilities are endless.
Even several years ago, an American beer brand took the world by storm by launching an initiative to use can rings as fishing tools. The can showed on one side the simple process of customization and adaptation to convert the ring into a practical utensil in the wild. It was a smart move: The Internet had been chock-full of manuals on how to transform a sheet metal into a fishing hook for years, with some pretty amazing collections.
