A new recycling exhibition opened at W5 Belfast to coincide with the 20th anniversary of recycling week. This new immersive recycling exhibit opened at the award-winning Center for Science and Discovery to coincide with this year’s Recycle Week, which commemorates its 20th anniversary.
The ‘Infinity Room’ installation, designed by the organization Every Can Counts, was created with the aim of teaching all ages the importance of recycling beverage cans, as well as illustrating the infinite recyclability of aluminum.

The center of attention at the exhibition was a gigantic beverage can, and those who enter will find themselves in a mirrored room that creates the illusion of being surrounded by an infinite number of suspended aluminum cans. At the same time, a storyteller takes participants on an immersive and educational journey about aluminum can recycling and its many environmental benefits.

This exhibition is not only a new experience for the hundreds of attendees at W5 Belfast, but also the 20th anniversary of Recycling Week. Recycle Week is an annual celebration of recycling that aims to encourage the public across the UK to recycle correctly and more often.
Composed of 1,500 recycled cans and 25 square meters of mirrors, the exhibit is also a visual spectacle and visitors can share their own photos and videos of the Infinity Room on social media with #EveryCanCounts.

New research by Every Can Counts into the recycling habits of Belfast residents also found that, on average, people enjoy around seven canned drinks per week. Of these seven cans, 78% are recycled on average, and just under half (48%) of those living in Belfast always use recycling garbage cans when out and about in public places, while only a third (31%) would take the packaging home for recycling if they could not find a recycling garbage can.

In this regard, Victoria Denoon, director of W5 Experience, indicated: “W5 is proud to work alongside Every Can Counts to showcase the Infinity Room Tour during Recycle Week 2023. The exhibit will be located in our In Our Nature zone, which highlights the importance of sustainability, climate change and our local environment and is aligned with W5’s mission to spark new learning opportunities in immersive environments where visitors of all ages and backgrounds can fully absorb and engage.”

“Like Every Can Counts, we are fully committed to inspiring the next generation to recycle and providing opportunities for them to learn about the science involved,” added Denoon.

Chris Latham-Warde, program director of Every Can Counts, also concluded by noting that “our unique Infinity Room installation has been a great success on its UK tour so far, and we are delighted that it is making its debut in Belfast. The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness of the infinite recyclability of beverage cans in a visual and interactive way. Every empty can could be recycled and put back on a store shelf as a new can in just 60 days and each of us can play a vital role in keeping the cycle going.”Denoon concluded.
