Recycled aluminum from beverage cans has reached a new global record of 580,000 tons. This adds to a wave of countries taking recycling much more seriously. EU countries, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland, achieved a recycling rate of 74.6% in the past year 2022, according to data from Metal Packaging Europe (MPE) and European Aluminium. Despite this, there has been a very slight decrease of 1% in this recycled aluminum.

This level of recycling represents a reduction in polluting gases equivalent to 5.4 million tons of CO2. Large cities like Oslo or Genoa produce a similar level of pollution throughout an entire year.

The positive effects are accompanied by an increase in the consumption of beverage cans, and although there has been progress in improving collection and sorting protocols, we are still far from the recycling levels requested by the European Union, which is 90%.

The new director of the Packaging Group at European Aluminium, Andy Doran, has explained that the sector is aware of this and maintains a long-term effort to achieve the outlined objectives. He also adds that they continue to grow and invest in expanded recycling capacities in Europe.

The director of MPE, Krassimira Kazashka, assures that they are on the right path towards 100% circularity for beverage cans by 2050.
