A new Spanish patent promises to eliminate heavy metals from canned foods and beverages. It is called Freemetals, according to the specialized magazine Iberian Press. The patent is developed by the company Bioribo SL and created by researcher Juan Carlos Llobregat with the intention of responding to sustainability and current health needs.

not only responds to current and urgent health needs. Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium or tin, among others, are common contaminants in some canned foods and beverages, which can cause kidney, liver and neurological diseases.

The well-known NGOs Bloom and Foodwatch, after 2 years of research, have just sent a worldwide alert of the high mercury contamination they have detected in cans in five European countries, including Spain, and that 10% of tuna cans in Europe have more mercury than allowed.

Freemetals uses advanced technology to effectively absorb and adsorb these heavy metals from canned products by trapping them in the inner lining of the can or container, thus ensuring that food and beverages are safe for consumption without compromising their quality or taste. It is applicable to a wide range of products, from canned fruits and vegetables to carbonated beverages and juices.
